Bromophenol blue is a sulfonephthalein dye with a transition range of pH 3.0–4.6 (yellow to blue). Negatively charged at neutral pH, it is used as a tracking dye in loading buffers for agarose DNA electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE, and also as a pH indicator and protein stain.
